Our aluminized steels offer formability, corrosion and heat protection as well as excellent atmospheric corrosion protection for high-temperature applications. AK Steel produces two kinds of aluminized products:
- Type 1, used for automotive exhaust systems, furnace heat exchangers and other heat-resistant applications and
- Type 1 Stainless 409 and 439, used for automotive extra long-life exhaust systems.
Aluminized Steel is continuously hot dip coated on both sides. The hot dip process, pioneered by AK Steel, provides a tight metallurgical bond between the steel and the coating.

Aluminized Steel Type 1
Aluminized Steel Type 1 is continuously hot dip coated on both sides with an aluminum/silicon alloy coating. Aluminized Type 1 contains approximately 91% aluminum and 9% silicon that is metallurgically bonded to the low-carbon steel substrate. It is intended principally for heat-resisting applications and also for uses where corrosion resistance and heat are involved. It is mainly used for automotive exhaust systems, furnace heat exchangers and other heat-resistant applications. Aluminzed Steel Type 1 conforms to ASTM Specification A 463.
Aluminized Steel Type 1 Stainless 409 and 439
Aluminized 409 and 439 Stainless Steel products have been developed to provide the automotive industry with life-of-the-car exhaust system materials. The Type 1 hot dip aluminum coating provides excellent resistance to pitting from muffler condensate and road salt, allowing the exhaust system to resist internal chlorides and retain good external appearance, even at uncoated welds. The aluminum coating significantly extends the life of the exhaust system over that of bare stainless. The coating is Type 1 Aluminized containing approximately 91% aluminum and 9% silicon.
